Chronicles of Narnia, anyone?! Aslan? Prince Caspian? The Secret Wardrobe? It’s what everyone’s childhood is (or at least should be) made of. Imagination and story. While Lewis’ writings in the Chronicles of Narnia kept me occupied as a young girl, his writings on theology and Christian faith spurred on growth as an adult. It’s easy to say he has had an influence on my life for most of my life!
To say that I was excited to draw a portrait of C.S. Lewis for Deeply Rooted Magazine would be an understatement. To put the man on paper that has so influenced my faith truly felt like an honor. I had discussed different projects with the editor prior to settling on this one, and I am so glad we did. I cannot think of a better way to contribute to the Deeply Rooted publication!
I experienced all the feels while creating this drawing, but do you want to know the icing on the cake? Communicating with the original photographer of this particular photo, Wolf Suschitzky. He is now over 100 years old living in Austria! Something about communicating with him and his assistant in regards to this photo made the life of Lewis all the more real to me. To communicate with someone who stood in the same room as him somehow made it personal. To top it off, they are both so kind and genuinely supportive of this project. The ongoing conversation was truly my treat!
